Worst over-hyped games of this generation

Over-hyped games are not always that great. Every year there are some games that are not nearly as good as they were made out to be.
Here are some truly hideous games that have been over-hyped before their release.

Age of Conan
Release  date: May 20, 2008 | New price: $9.99 | Used price: N/A | PC
Average review score: 80%

Age of Conan, like many other MMORPGs, was supposed to rival the World of Warcraft universe. At first, everyone loved it; the game seemed to have the potential to grab a portion of World of Warcraft’s subscribers. But as soon as people leveled past 20 and left the starting area, one thing became clear: this game was going to be a grind fest. The  environments all look the same, and the number of quests decreases dramatically. The horrible Player vs Player system didn’t help either. However, this game isn’t dead yet, as there is still a group of dedicated players on the merged servers. There is also an expansion coming out soon, so maybe there’s still hope for Conan game to get back on its feet.

Lair
Release  date: August 31, 2007 | New price: $17 | Used price: $5-8 | PS3
Average review score: 53%

When gameplay footage of Lair was shown during E3, every PS3 owners immediately wanted this game. The game looked amazing, and the soundtrack hit the spot. There were tons of enemies on screen, and the developer also promised great Six-axis control. Everything was looking good for Lair…that is until people got their hands on it. The controls were absolutely terrible – flying the dragon in the right direction was difficult in the best of circumstances and when fighting enemies it was near impossible. There are software updates for Lair that allow players to use the normal control scheme instead of the Six-axis, but it is already too little too late for this dud.

Too Human
Release  date: August 19, 2008 | New price: $12 | Used price: $5-8 | Xbox 360
Average review score: 65%

This is a classic example of an over-hyped game. The game would have simply been labeled mediocre, with its annoying camera system, button-mashing combos and long death animation, but the developer Denis Dyack over-hyped this game, constantly telling the press about its amazing features. When negative reviews of the game came out, he is quoted as saying: “If you don’t like this game, you just don’t get it…” If Mr.Dyack just kept his opinions to himself, this game may have sold many more copies. Gamers are not going to buy a game just to be criticized (they’ll play online for that).

Haze
Release  date: May 20, 2008 | New price: $17 | Used price: $3-6 | PS3
Average review score: 55%

From the developers who gave us TimeSplitters and Golden Eye 007 comes this disappointing PS3 exclusive. Free Radical somehow managed to forget how to make a good game after their early successes, and the product of their temporary amnesia is Haze. In the single player, players have to play as both Mantel and Rebels to complete the game. The Mantel can inject themselves with a nectar to improve their accuracy while Rebels use guerrilla tactics and try to get Mantel troopers to overdose on nectar. The Rebels can also play dead when they have received enough damage. True, the game mechanics are interesting, but the whole game is plagued by glitches and bugs. Players will probably be forced to turn off their console a few times before completion.

Two Worlds
Release  date: August 24, 2007 | New price: $15 | Used price: $4-7 | Xbox 360, PC
Average review score: 50%

For a game that was supposed to be better than Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion,  Two Worlds turned out to be a buggy and boring Xbox360 exclusive.  The whole game doesn’t make any sense and uses terrible voice actors that do not know how to speak clearly or pronounce words. This game also has one of the worst endings in video game history. The Two Worlds developers are currently working on Two Worlds 2, and hopefully it will be much better than the first one, which shouldn’t be difficult, as Two Worlds is definitely one of the worst games this generation.

Lair was a very decent game.Im really sick of people saying the controls were “terrible”..I ont consider myself gifted when it comes to games and I had no problem adjusting to the controls and beating the game…the graphics are AMAZING, the gameplay, though slightly repetitive is still pretty fun and addicting and the story and main character are awesome…dont say its too little too late…go out and pick up a used copy and stop complaining biatches

Where in the world is halo 3, cod:mw2 and gta 4???. and when was lair even “hyped”?

Hey idiot, Halo 3, MW2 and GTA IV were fantastic upon releases. You only consider them bad after months of playing them. It’s like saying Super Mario Bros has shitty graphics. Lair and Haze were hyped up within the early release of the PS3.

YOU are the idiot, just because Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Grand Theft Auto 4, sold well on release, it doesn’t excuse the fact they were all broken in ways which made it either hard to play or maybe even unplayable to some people! Super Mario Bros. . . And like Halo wasn’t hyped in the early release of the Xbox. In fact Halo is all the original Xbox had, in EXCLUSIVES.

anybody who tries to call GTA IV a bad, overhyped game is just retarded. and Halo 3 and MW2? even if you dont like the games, their incredible popularity and lasting fanbases prove your dumb ass wrong. i hope you were just saying this for shock value and arent actually this stupid

To be honest, Modern Warfare and Halo 3 were much worse than they were hyped up to be. Both of these games received massive praise for their online, but Halo 3 is kinda shallow, (although forge and creating game modes spices it up a little,) and MW2 is so unbalanced and laggy that I am on the verge of trading it in. And don’t even get me started on MW2′s story, which was a major disappointment compared to COD4. Yet, despite these games flaws, they still got high review scores, that fact alone deserves them a spot on this list. OR make a new article titled “games that got good reviews that are actually shitty.”

“Worst Over-Hyped Games this Gen” isn’t going to include MW2, GTA4, or Halo 3 because they aren’t “the worst”. Over-hyped, yes, but definitely not the worst games. I personally think MW2 isn’t a good game but I acknowledge the fact that apparently hundreds of thousands of people disagree with me.

“From the developer who gave us TimeSplitters and Golden Eye 007
Better fix that unless you think that Free Radical merged with Rare.

I’m gonna have to say it’s Red Dead Redemption, not because it’s a bad game or anything, but because after the initial craze,it seemed to just whither away.I know that there are still some people playing it,but I remember when it was released, almost everyone on my friends list was playing it non stop, now,no one touches it.

I don’t know why Lair gets on all of these type of lists, where I found it great, it was an awesome game, sure not the best, but was really good, and a lot of people I knew said it was bad cause they used the controller so wrong, you are supposed to subtle movements, not so hard, I found it good to control after getting used to, and for those who didn’t like it got the down loadable patch for playing with analog sticks. Another things, is when i felt like playing with an analog stick before the patch, i just played Lair in remote play.

Second, I thought Haze was pretty good too, brought new ideas to the first person shooter genre, and giving the game the bad rep. is to me, due to Ubisoft changing its plans for the games. The graphics for Haze was good, where it was a multiplatform game, that just went exclusive, which made it look horrible to people, because when people think PS3 exclusive, most think great graphics, like Metal Gear Solid 4, but it was originally and still just seems like a multiplatform game. Also, it released in the time of crappy ports, do it could of been PS3 was getting a crappy port from the 360 version, but since made exclusive to PS3, it was the only version and crappy version. If Haze was to come out on 360 as well, would of probably been seen differently, and had more sales, where this is a game i feel deserves a sequel, because the developers learned what people didn’t like, learned how to use the PS3 console’s architecture and they could improve and add so much more, already having co-op and split-screen, online, 2 factions, making them more balanced, and they could have a better story. It could of been the next Killzone, where Killzone 1 was good, but when the sequel came, Killzone 2, it was awesome, graphics, game-play and story wise, and now Killzone 3 will build upon that and get better as a sequel.

  • OhNo OhNo

Two Worlds was not an xbox exclusive.

  • First of all – Two Worlds is NOT X360 exsclusive. So hard to check on Metacritics or Gamerankings :) ? And the PC version was quite good cRPG with vast, open world graphics better then in Gothic 3 and unique fighting system.

Age of Conan over-hyped with 80% average score and sucessful add-on? Over-hyped as an best-looking MMO? And the “WOW-killer” was mostly created by fans and journalists, not makers of AoC.

780o on N4G for this crap list? L0l.

  • TommyTomTom TommyTomTom

Two Worlds is not an Xbox 360 exclusive. IT is a PC & Xbox 360 game. And best version is in PC: Epic Edition one.

Who cares about the non graphical tweaking version of occidental rpg 1player games? Oblivion in Xbox 360 suffers from the same than TES III: ram & Vram. Risen, Dragon Age Origins or Venetica sucks on the videoconsole.

  • kane_1371 kane_1371

this list without halo3, mw2 and gta4 is useless.
also get of lair’s case, it was a good game, and deserves more credit than what you guys gave it.

Can’t forget Fable 2, spore and assassins creed. Sure they were good, but they never delivered anywhere near what they promised.
